A lipstick named Indépendante

If there is one woman who symbolises independence, it is Gabrielle Chanel. At a time when social mobility did not exist, the abandoned daughter of a travelling salesman leapt four by four through the hierarchical floors to reach the top of the pyramid, at the head of a fashion house that became the epitome of luxury.
Never married and childless, she knew how to navigate a world for which she was not cut out. When she created her millinery business, Boy Capel, her lover, opened a line of credit for her at his bank in the autumn of 1910, enabling her to rent an apartment at 21 Rue Cambon and hang up a sign reading Chanel Modes.
Boy Capel then helped her open a boutique in Deauville and then in Biarritz. But as soon as her finances allowed, Gabrielle Chanel repaid him in full, with interest, in 1915. ‘I won’t really know if I love you until I no longer need you,’ she once told him. Upon learning that his mistress had paid off her debts, Boy Capel said to her, ‘I thought I had given you a toy, but I gave you freedom.’

Un rouge à lèvres, c’est un artifice, une couleur pour mettre en avant une bouche qui va parler ou bien se taire, qui va sourire ou se fermer. Un rouge à lèvres rouge, c’est un signe puissant, une couleur déposée sur une page faite non de papier mais de chair.
Rouge c’est la couleur qu’avait choisie Lucia Pica pour l’ensemble de la première collection qu’elle a créée en tant que Global Creative designer pour le Maquillage et la Couleur de Chanel et qui fut lancée en 2016. « Mademoiselle Chanel avait l’habitude de dire: Si vous êtes triste, si vous avez un chagrin d’amour, maquillez-vous, mettez du rouge à lèvres, et attaquez. Pour elle, cette couleur signifiait le pouvoir, celui de la féminité. Pour moi, paradoxalement, il représente aussi la vulnérabilité et tous les aspects de la femme, l’expérience, le désir, la sensualité», expliquait Lucia Pica.
Quand ce rouge s’appelle Indépendante le symbole est encore plus fort. On peut choisir un fard pour sa couleur (c’est d’ailleurs recommandé). Mais on peut aussi le choisir pour son nom. Je l’ai choisi pour cela: pour la promesse qu’il porte en lui et en laquelle j’ai furieusement envie de croire.
